Introduction to Classroom Assessment for Learning with Rick Stiggins

For those new to the concept of student-involved classroom assessment, this one-day pre-conference session offers a solid foundation in the principles of sound assessment practices and provides you with a context for the information you will encounter in the conference institutes. Rick Stiggins leads you through an examination of the key connections between assessment and effective schools. You'll also learn how to balance the roles of standardized tests and classroom assessment, commonsense standards for judging assessment quality and strategies for building balanced assessment programs. At the end of the day, you will have a clear understanding of the difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning.

How to Grade for Learning with Ken O'Connor

Teachers are using standards as the base to link an increasingly broad range of assessment approaches with their teaching to improve learning. In many schools, however, there has been little change in grading and reporting practices. What is needed is the linking of standards-based classroom assessment to grading and reporting practices to make grades and report cards more meaningful. This interactive session examines standards-based grading and reporting practices and principles which capitalize on these new assessment approaches, encourage effective learning and support student success. Participants will analyze fifteen fixes for grading which would really make a difference if they were applied in our classrooms, and will have opportunities to discuss implications of the ideas presented to their school/district.
